Joshua 2:21 “…and she tied the scarlet cord in the window.” (NIV)*
Rahab had heard how the Israelite’s God parted the Red Sea and how the kings of the Amorites were destroyed. Her people were melting in fear. She knew a take over was imminent.
Rahab took action. She hid Israelite spies and asked for a sign of protection. The spies offered a scarlet cord. When the Israelites came to take Jericho, they would spare her family if the scarlet cord was tied in the window.
Back in Egypt, the Israelites had smeared lamb’s blood on the doorposts of their homes as a sign that their family was to be spared death. The scarlet cord was a sign that Rahab’s family was to be passed over.
When God offers a scarlet cord one would be wise to grab hold. Tie it to the heart’s window, expressing belief in a powerful God who does what he says. It seems too simple, yet, God has provided a scarlet cord for us…Jesus.
These physical bodies are going down and death is unavoidable. We’ll be spared eternal death if we let the doorpost of our life be covered with the blood of the lamb. Hung in the window of the heart, this scarlet cord is a sign that we’ve been set apart for another land. Heaven. Forever with him.
Is it any wonder that Rahab went on to be in the lineage of our Savior? She hung a scarlet cord…her heir would be the scarlet cord for the world.
Set apart for another land
Jesus, tied to my heart
A sign to all passing by
For Him, I’m set apart.

A scarlet cord in the window
Lamb’s blood on door frame
Signs of God’s protection
Life, no longer the same.

Lord, thank you for offering the scarlet cord. Bought by the cross, given in grace and stayed by your mercy.
