Like a Holy Magnet

“‘Put out into the deep water and let down your nets for a catch’ . . . And when they had done this, they caught a great quantity of fish, and their nets began to tear.”

Have you not heard the nets tear, breaking to the point
of needing an extra boat — with extra hands —
to help carry the haul?

Have you not felt the water wetting your feet
when the boats began to sink from the weight
of all He has provided?

Have your faces not stuck in amazement
when He did what you, the experts,
could not do?

Words failed you, did they not? Except to express
an unexpected, overwhelming awareness of sin,
when confronted with the reality of Him.

……….

Imagine the sound waves of His voice reaching over the waters. The Creator’s words pulsing over the sea like gentle heartbeats, drawing the fish to their Maker. Or, did He just think it and the fish came? Either way, a life-changing miracle for fishers of fish who were about to become fishers of people.

Scripture tells us that the fishermen had fished all night and caught nothing. Then, after Jesus spoke to the crowd from the boat, the fish were there, waiting in the deep to fulfill their destiny. They caught such a large quantity that the nets began to break. The boats began to sink. (Luke 5:5-7). Such is the ability of our Lord. We worry and fret — stay up all night — but Jesus speaks from a boat and the fish show up.

He has proven that He will provide. I don’t have to have all the details figured out. The provision comes — drawn in, perhaps, by the reverberations of His voice. Captivating, like a holy magnet.

When we realize the Sovereignty of the One Whose words do not fail, and in worship have fallen to His knees, what else is there to do . . . but follow?

So leaving everything, they followed Him.
