When God Replaces the Frantic Stress with Snow

He spreads the snow like wool . . .
— Psalm 147:16 (NIV)

Come, Lord Jesus, come,
with Your blanket of white.

Cover me thoroughly,
keep me securely,
calm this racing soul.

Gift me, I pray, the stillness of snow.

Shelves emptied as people scurried to buy groceries prior to the imminent snow storm. This was no calm before the storm. Instead, the air was frantic with expectation and preparation.

God’s power once again speaks through creation and reminds us that we are not in control. Life alters to adjust to a bigger agenda.

Psalm 19:1-4 tells us, “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands. Day after day they pour forth speech, night after night they reveal knowledge. They have no speech, they use no words; no sound is heard from them. Yet their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world.”

Continually, the skies speak. They rain. They hail. They sleet. They snow. They display incredible sunrises and sunsets. They clap with thunder, scatter clouds, and spread immaculate rainbows.

With no audible words, God’s glory is revealed through the skies and we begin to realize the truth of Colossians 1:17, “He is before all things, and in him all things hold together” (NIV). Ecclesiastes 3:11 resonates awe, “He has made everything beautiful in its time” (NIV).

And who couldn’t use grace covering us like snow? Isaiah 1:18 says, “Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool” (NIV). Snow falls from the heavens and covers the imperfections — the dirt — in nature. God poured His grace to the world through the sacrifice of His perfect lamb, Jesus, and makes us as white and as clean as snow. When we let Him.

And when He covers the earth with a thick blanket of white, stillness replaces the frantic; sovereign calm covers the stress; and pure, unblemished white, blankets all.

Lord, thank you for the calming gift of snow that reminds us that you are in control and that you make all things beautiful in Your time. Thank you for the sacrifice of Jesus that covers over me like snow. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
