Finding Comfort in Our Divine Shepherd

Know that the Lord is God. It is He who made us, and we are His; we are His people, the sheep of His pasture.
— Psalm 100:3 NIV

We have a shepherd
Who walks ahead,
pours living water and
gives daily bread.

We have a shepherd
Who scouts the land,
thwarts the enemy and
cares for the lamb.

We have a shepherd
with rod and staff,
Who restores the soul and
straightens the path.

We have a shepherd
faithful to His flock —
forever committed,
this Shepherd is our Rock.
……….

He made us and we are His — the sheep of His pasture. There is nothing too small for Him to care about. Nothing too big for Him to handle. We can place every concern and worry into His hands. He who knit us together in our mother's womb (Psalm 139:13 ESV), knows the before, during, and after of our lives. He will never leave us or forsake us. He is with us, always. We are not alone — ever.

Psalm 23, often read at funerals, contains beautiful truths about the Lord's daily presence in our lives. With the Lord, we have access to His continual help and comfort. He wants to walk with us through life's trials. We do ourselves a favor when we take His hand and follow His lead.

Psalm 23:1-3 says, "The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake" (ESV).

Have you ended up in a place you never intended to be? Is the field surrounded by enemies and the grass not so green? Call out to the Shepherd and He will hear. There may not be a complete, immediate change, but He will be with you. He will show you the next steps to the best path for your life.

May you find rest today knowing that you have a committed Shepherd, indeed.

Lord, thank you that You want to walk with me each step of the way. Thank you that when I call to You, You gently lead me back to Your path. You are a good Shepherd. You are mine, and I am Yours. In Jesus' Name, Amen.

For further reading, I recommend, A Shepherd looks at Psalm 23, by pastor/shepherd Phillip Keller (Zondervan 1970). Keller provides insightful information regarding the devotion of shepherds to their beloved sheep. This is book one of his trilogy about shepherds and sheep — all three are excellent reading and time well spent.
