A glowing flame

Numbers 9:18 “At the Lord’s command the Israelites set out, and at his command they encamped.”*

…..

A cloud to follow when it’s light,

at dark—a flame that’s glowing.

Turning left or turning right,

are we staying or are we going?

…..

Do tell when it’s time to pack

and where to put roots down.

Holy Spirit…got my back?

I’m following you around!

I think I’d like a flame or a cloud to follow—to tell me where to go. Wouldn’t that be easier? But wait…I have the written Word and the indwelling Holy Spirit. I’m not left in the dark; guidance is available.

I, too, was entranced by this passage–imagining how cool it would have been to have God as a “visual” I couldn’t mistake. Even with His Word and the indwelling Holy Spirit, I find I sometimes get confused–but my comfort and security is having faith that He’ll “turn me around” if I misread the signals and signposts with my aging vision!
