planted by streams

Psalm 1:2-3 “But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither. Whatever he does prospers.” (NIV)*

A tree planted by streams of water stays put. The roots go deep. The stream provides a continual source of nourishment for green leaves and growing fruit.

The fruit drops seed, which causes more trees to grow. More fruit is produced. And then, more seeds are dropped. More trees grow. More fruit is produced. You get the picture–an orchard is in progress! All from one tree.

Psalm 1 indicates that the key to a green, fruit bearing tree is meditating on the word day and night. Staying by streams of water means to stay in his word, delighting in it and meditating on it.

His word is life-giving water. Staying engrossed keeps us healthy spiritually–green and producing fruit. And that’s what a healthy tree does…reproduce.

And should a canopy appear someday, don’t be surprised if others are finding shade under your branches.
